This year’s theme for Koolangka Takeover Week is “Two-way Learning”!

What is “Two-way Learning”?
Two-way learning is a teaching method that combines Indigenous and Western knowledge. It helps students learn about Indigenous culture, like language and stories, while also covering regular subjects. This approach promotes respect for different ways of learning and ensures all students benefit from both Indigenous and Western teachings.
What is an example of “Two-way Learning”?
An example of two-way learning in an Australian Indigenous context is when students study the environment by learning both Indigenous knowledge and Western science. For instance, they might visit a bushland with an Indigenous Elder who teaches them about traditional uses of plants and animals, like bush tucker and firestick farming. At the same time, their teacher explains scientific ideas, like species classification and food chains. By learning from both perspectives, students gain a deeper understanding of the environment, appreciating how these two ways of knowing work together.
